Last week on a sunny spring day we decided to have dinner at Helkan Keittiö (‘Helka’s Kitchen’, in English) situated in the center of Helsinki on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 23. We recently moved to a new flat close to Hotel Helka and it is convenient for us to go there even with our baby boy. We did take our 4,5 month old boy with us, his first time in a restaurant!
Helkan Keittiö is a hidden culinary gem in the heart of Helsinki. Inside Helka Hotel hides the cosy Helkan Keittiö restaurant that serves local Finnish specialities with a twist. Helka Hotel and its Helkan Keittiö restaurant are located in a historical building and their interior design is the work of leading interior designers Gullstén & Inkinen and elegant furniture by Artek Oy.
The restaurant is ideal for foreign visitors who want to enjoy Finnish (or Nordic, in general) cuisine with a modern twist. Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, you can enjoy a lovely dinner at an pleasant environment. Locals can also enjoy their dinner on special occasions, they will be smitten with the ambiance, delicious food and friendly staff.
Helka Keittiö has been one of my favourite restaurants for many years ever since I moved to Helsinki to study in Sibelius Academy. I always sit on any of the tables facing the painting of a Finnish forest overlooking the city life from the wide, arched window. I love their innovative ways of using typically Finnish produce, seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as high quality fish and meat. Helkan Keittiö’s head chef designs a three-course menu for each season inspired by fresh and seasonal ingredients. The menu is an addition to the à la carte menu available. There is a new head chef, -Juha-Pekka Eironen- leading the brigade of chefs at Helkan Keittiö, we had the pleasure of meeting him and he will be the one designing the upcoming Summer Menu. Caramelised golden beets and parmesan
Caramelised golden beets, parmesan, candy stripe beetroot, watercress and roasted pumpkin seeds
Main course: Fried whitefish and leek
Fried whitefish, braised leeks, horseradish parsnip puree and roe sauce
Main course: Lamb loin, pea potato puree
Lamb loin, pea potato puree flavoured with truffle, pickled mustard seeds
Dessert: Something Pink
Yogurt panna cotta, cranberry sorbet, strawberries and white balsamic
Helkan Keittiö restaurant is open from Monday – Thursday from 17:00 – 22:00, on Fridays from 17:00 – 23:00, and on Saturdays from 12:00 – 23:00
