My hair has been in need of a haircut for months. My ends are split and dry, my roots are flat and there is no shape or volume to my hair, which makes my whole face dragged down.
In early December 2016, a new Pepe Åhman hair salon opened in Lauttasaari and I decided to book an appointment to give my hair a new life, since I was planning to attend the opening of Lauttis Shopping Center. I was paired with the beautiful, talented and sporty Kristiina Kangasniemi, a 26-year old hairdresser and fitness enthusiast from Nurmijärvi.
I told Kristiina before we started that I like to wear my hair in a ponytail at home (so that it stays out of my way when cooking and taking care of my baby) and that I would like to grow my hair. “You lots of thick hair so if we cut it at the same length it would look too heavy and flat. As for the length, we will keep it as long as possible, I’ll just sharpen the line and give it shape. Adding some horizontal layers will flatter your face shape very well. Layers gives you more body and volume and more creativity with styling it if you like to curl it or so, it looks more fluffy. Finally, I will style it with some trendy soft waves with side parting which brings out your cheekbones beautifully,” she explained. So let’s get started!
Throughout the process, we were talking about how different haircuts and hairstyles fit or compliment various face types. This is how Kristiina sums it up. Do you know what is your face shape and what are the do’s and don’ts for your own face? Read along to find out!
Haircuts and hairstyles can flatter your face shape
“A good haircut helps us ‘contour’ our faces. We can hide some areas and highlight our best features,” explains Kristiina.
According to Kristiina, here are some examples of which haircuts flatter best various face shapes:
If you have a diamond face shape, your haircut needs to bring softness to your face. Opt for lots of layers, side long bangs, side part cause it takes away attention from the middle of the face. Avoid heavy or straight bangs, centre parting, very short haircuts.
The best haircut for a round face shape is adding layers. Long hair suits better with round face shapes cause it gives an elongate effect for the face. Avoid a bob or any haircuts where all hair is the same length! Adding fringe with a hint of texture will be flattering, too.
If you have an oblong face shape, the last thing you want to do is get a hairstyle that makes your face look even longer. Add bangs -it instantly makes your face look shorter. You need to create width and body on the sides of your face. Curls, waves and horizontal layers create the illusion of width. Heavy side bangs work well too. Avoid volume on the top.
For a heart shape face a lob fits perfectly. It helps soften a strong jawline. A deep side part brings emphasis to your cheekbones. Add some face framing layers. Go for blunt wispy bangs, but it has to bee narrowed because you don’t want to widen your face even more. Avoid short and wide heavy bangs.
Now back to Kristiina and her interesting life! Kristiina has always been passionate about beauty and fashion, therefore she decided to study hairdressing for 3 years. “After my graduation, I felt that I have a profession that I love doing. When you love what you do it doesn’t feel like working. At my work, I love to make people feel even more beautiful and better about themselves. My goal is to make every person I meet feel better. Nothing is better than a satisfied customer as a result of my work,” explains Kristiina.
Kristiina had a loyal customer base for nearly 7 years at the very same salon she started her career after graduation. It was high time to take on new challenges. Kristiina decided to take a new leap of faith and leave the small city of Nurmijärvi which was her comfort zone in order to take a new job at Pepe Åhman salon in Helsinki.
“That was probably the craziest decision in my life to change everything (new city, new job, moving in with my fiancé) at once but it was the best decision I’ve ever made, I couldn’t be happier now! Now I feel more ambitious than ever. I’m so grateful that I am part of the new Pepe Åhman Hairsalon in Lauttis from its very beginning where I’m creating a new customer base. Fresh start, new opportunities. Love that!” says Kristiina.
“Now my focus is being the best hairdresser in Lauttasaari and making this new year the best one!” she adds.
