Insights from Fujitsu Forum 2014

One of the brightest minds in today’s IT world is Dr. Joseph Reger, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) with various Fujitsu entities since 2002. As of August 1, 2014 he was appointed as CTO for Fujitsu’s Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) region. I had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Reger for the first time four years ago and ever since I always make sure to get a front seat to attend his keynotes. This year the opportunity to listen to his brilliant thoughts filled with unique insights and humour happened during the Fujitsu Forum 2014 in Munich, Germany.

On Day 0, during the press conference, Dr. Joseph Reger spoke about the Internet of Things and Digital Transformation and distinguished between ‘Digital Business vs. Digitalized Business‘. For instance, Starbucks offers an analog product (coffee) with a number of digitalized services developed around the analog product which include wifi, online meetings, big data analysis, products will become services.

Dr. Reger’s contribution in developing Fujitsu’s Cloud Computing Strategy is instrumental and in currently he is focusing on the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 topics. Industry 4.0 is a term coined in Germany but it has rapidly spread in other nations to be defined as such ‘Industry 4.0 is part of the entire Digital Transformation value chain using IoT technology (not industry automation)’ In German, he term ‘Industrie 4.0’ refers to the fourth industrial revolution, a new wave of technological changes that will decentralize production control and trigger a paradigm shift in manufacturing. The first industrial revolution was the mechanization of production using water and steam power, it was followed by the second industrial revolution which introduced mass production with the help of electric power, followed by the digital revolution, the use of electronics and IT to further automate production. An afternoon at the museum!

It’s a Saturday afternoon in Helsinki. It’s frosty cold outside, almost -15°C! I’m entering Forum. Finally, I can warm myself up. Kim is waiting for me by Spin FM’s dj booth. I’m 15 minutes late. “Let’s go to the art museum,” I say. We ask directions from the Infodesk. Two floors up from where we were standing, then outside, straight and turn left. Soon we arrive to the Amos Anderson Art Museum.

Amos Anderson Art Museum is the largest private art museum in Finland. The founder of the museum Amos Anderson (1878–1961) owned Finland’s largest Swedish-language daily Hufvudstadsbladet and has also been a generous patron of Finnish art and science. After Anderson’s death, his house was converted into a museum.

We take the elevator to the 6th floor where Sauli Miettunen’s sculputes were on display and then make our way down to Anderson’s private chapel and to the Constructors of Light (Valon rakentajat) exhibition, which features 1940’s and 1950’s art.

The permanent collection and the current exhibitions are rich and focus on 20th century Finnish art. The atmosphere in the museum is warm and cozy. If you want to spend a relaxed afternoon with your friends or family, come down to Forum and get in Amos Anderson Art Museum!

Make your wish come true!

Forum’s ground floor is filled with restaurants and is always full with people enjoying a meal. In the middle, there is a glass construction and a water fountain part of an art installation.

In many cultures such as the Greek and the Chinese, water is known as the symbol of life and wealth. The water element in the center of the busiest part of part gives an essence of tranquility and calmness. If you take a look in the water, you can see lots of coins at bottom. I guess that many visitors made their wishes by throwing a coin in the fountain!

Why not you? Come and make your wish for the New Year!
Who knows? Forum’s fairy might turn them into reality…

Ask your friends for a rendezvous at those geographical coordinates: Longitude 24° 56′ 28”/ Latitude 60° 10′ 8”!
