Food is one of my life’s greatest pleasures. And, as a voracious and dedicated carnivore, there is nothing more soulful and soothing that a good quality steak cooked to perfection. Whenever, I want to spoil myself, there is only one place I visit in order to fulfil my appetite and treat my palate to a juicy steak: GOODWIN Steakhouse.
The key to a great steakhouse is the steak. GOODWIN Steakhouse does it right, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Last month we had a meeting over a wonderful meal at GOODWIN Steakhouse. We ordered a rib-eye, a filet mignon and a New York steak and they were all from delicious, top quality meat, cooked beautifully.
Each steak comes with a complimentary sauce and you can choose any of these sauces with all the steaks: GOODWIN’s sauce with red wine, berries and honey, pepper sauce with cream and fresh pepper, mushroom sauce with cream and mushrooms, and spicy sauce with herbs and garlic. My favourite is the creamy pepper sauce followed by the spicy garlic sauce with herbs!
There is also a selection of side dishes to accompany your steaks with. I usually opt for the french fries and the grilled vegetables! Other sides include fried potatoes with mushrooms, creamy spinach, mashed potato with Dorblu cheese, salad of ripe tomatoes with red onion (basil or coriander dressing).
The portions of our steaks were fulfilling yet there is always room for dessert. I indulged in a hot chocolate fondant with dark chocolate, served with vanilla ice cream..
…and my friends ordered a three-way créme brûlée (pistachio + vanilla + coffee)
and a classic New York cheesecake.
GOODWIN Steakhouse Helsinki is located on an excellent central location with an urban view overlooking the sea (if you happen to sit on a table by the windows) on Eteläranta 14. The first GOODWIN restaurant opened in Tallinn and this year a brand new GOODWIN opened its doors in Iso Omena Espoo. For music-lovers, note that there will be two Live Jazz evenings coming up at GOODWIN Iso Omena on 02.12.16 and 09.12.16.
Interview with GOODWIN’s General Manager
I had the chance to meet GOODWIN’s General Manager, Janar Laas who has been with the company from the beginning. Before GOODWIN, Janar spent 9 years in 5-star hotels in central London from which 6 years in managerial positions.
“Everyone is welcome at GOODWIN! At different times there are different customers. For lunch there are mainly businesspeople and over the weekends there are tourists and families. First time visitors should try our meat. Australian marbling meat is still not very common in Scandinavia and we use a special charcoal oven (Josper) what gives our meat a unique taste; it is perfect combination for the perfect steak. As for our repeated customers, once you taste our steak, it is challenging not to what them again,” says Janar.
“As we are traditional American steak house, the menu was and is built around marbling beef steaks and what goes well with them. To offer some competition to the steaks, we also have a very good choice of seafood dishes. My favourite steak? It is very hard to choose one, but if I must I would say dry aged Rib-eye prepared medium along with Goodwin sauce and fried potatoes with mushrooms,” explains Janar about what’s on the GOODWIN menu and what is his favourite dish.
